Like poetry, these paintings do not dictate a clear narrative but rather, quietly offer a fragment, a piece of a mysteriously familiar narrative. In this artist’s paintings, there has continued to be a paring down of recognisable natural forms. These paintings allow man to see with his mind what he cannot see physically with his eyes. The paradox, primarily depicts the formal elements of design, rather than necessarily based one recognisable images. Balance is created within these forms of art due to the textures, colours, forms, and shapes combining harmoniously. In terms of movement the viewer’s eye is directed to move through a composition, often to areas of emphasis. Being directed by lines, contrasting shapes, or colours within the artwork. Since these particular paintings are primarily about the formal elements of design, rather than necessarily based on recognisable images, it is very significant how the artist has used the elements of art to convey particular principles of art, for this is what gives the painting its meaning and feeling. The colours and placement of the brush strokes allows us to appreciate the art and we don’t expect to “get it” immediately.
