‘Elements’

‘Elements’ 2022. Acrylic paint and graphic pen on canvas. 108.7cm x 78.8cm.

In the last week I finished painting ‘Elements’. With each new painting I like to experiment with techniques, to better understand my phenomenological journey within a landscape, and to push my perceived boundaries of painting. After dabbling with appliqué in previous paintings, I wanted to continue this idea of physically layering paintings, to create a tangible depth. By cutting out sections, glimpses of the painting beneath are revealed, creating a conversation between two moments in time, reinventing my previous explorations of the landscape to create a new reality. Areas of flat block colour are introduced to the canvas beneath, to break up an overstimulated visual landscape. These areas of flat colour bleed onto the frontal canvas. Finally graphic lines are reintroduced, weaving in and out of each canvas and each layer, to increase the complexity and intertwine the separate layers towards a unity. This painting pushes for a sensory overload, experimenting with visual techniques and bold colours, to take the viewer on a journey, with endless pathways for visual exploration.
